Born Into Brothels
We were so moved by this Academy Award-winning documentary about children in the red light district of Calcutta that we contacted Director Zana Briski to see how we could get involved.

We brought in writer Carol Miller to tell the personal stories of each of the seven children featured in the film, and designed the coffee table book around their compelling photographic portfolios. SCORING THE CREATIVE PROCESS
During the research phase of a project for the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, we were fascinated to see how the musician’s creative process parallels our own.
- description2: To express the educational experience of the conservatory in a language that would be appreciated by aspiring musicians, we developed personal narratives of a student, a faculty member, and the city of San Francisco itself. The stories develop simultaneously, carried on abstract musical staffs. The juxtaposition of the narratives represents musical counterpoint, where independent melodies play contemporaneously to create harmony.
San Francisco Art Institute
What prospective students want from a college viewbook is a sense of the creative environment in which they will be living and learning.
- description2: Melanie Doherty Design teamed up with photographer Todd Hido to document a full semester of student life in the studios, critiques and culturally rich San Francisco. We juxtaposed student and faculty interviews to emphasize SFAI’s commitment to dialog and to preparing students for a life in the global art world. Vibrant photo essays capture the Institute’s vital, experimental spirit.
Investing In Women
One of our first assignments for the Global Fund for Women was to conceive the design and concept for the Legacy Fund Campaign, which raised $20 million to establish the world’s largest women’s endowment fund.
- description2: When we began working with GFW, the organization was at a transitional point in its development, evolving from a small non-profit to a leading international women’s human rights network. Today, GFW has awarded over $80 million to 4,200 women’s organizations in 171 countries worldwide.
SAINTS BE PRAISED
The San Francisco Chronicle ranked our labels for St. Supéry’s Meritage among the ten best wine label designs in the US.
- description2: For over 15 vintages, we have commissioned renowned illustrators from around the world to interpret St. Supery’s fictional patron. The most recent Meritage Elú label was created by San Francisco’s own Vivienne Flesher.
St. Supéry Vineyards & Winery
In our 20-year partnership with St. Supéry, we’ve developed an enduring wine brand that only improves with age.

Catalogs
When designing catalogs for the nation’s leading retailers, we identify each brand’s market niche, and then create the inspirational visuals to engage their consumer.
- description2: Directing creative teams of photographers, stylists and merchants, we create the lifestyle stories that drive consumers to the web, to retail stores or to the phone to make their purchase. We manage all aspects of the process, from brand development and copywriting to photography art direction, design and production.
